Terms of Service.

These Terms of Service apply to akusento.com.

Last updated: July 6, 2026

1. Acceptance of these terms

By accessing or using akusento.com (the "Service"), you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, please do not use the Service. These terms apply in addition to our Privacy Policy, which governs how we handle personal data.

2. Description of the service

akusento is a research preview of a Japanese pitch accent parser, together with an educational guide, a training tool, a dictionary search, and a reading library of pitch-annotated Japanese text. The Service is under active development. Features, output, and availability may change or be withdrawn at any time without notice.

3. Ownership and intellectual property

Our content

Except for the underlying literary source texts described in Section 7, all content on this website is owned by akusento or its licensors and is protected by copyright and other intellectual property laws. This includes, without limitation:

  • pitch accent annotations and rule classifications generated by the akusento parser (the underlying pitch accent data itself is addressed in Section 6);
  • editorial notes, commentary, and explanations accompanying library texts and guide content;
  • the text of the akusento guide;
  • the website design, layout, typography, and visual identity; and
  • the "akusento" name and logo, which are unregistered trademarks of the operator.

What this means in practice

You may view, read, and use this content for personal, educational, and non-commercial purposes. You may not copy, scrape, republish, redistribute, or incorporate this content — in whole or in substantial part — into another product, website, dataset, or service without our prior written permission.

4. Permitted use

You may:

  • browse and read pages on this website for personal study or research;
  • use the parser preview, training tool, and dictionary search as intended, at normal interactive usage volumes;
  • link to pages on this website;
  • quote short excerpts of our editorial content with clear attribution to akusento and a link back to the source page, where permitted by applicable law;

5. Prohibited use

Unless you have our prior written permission, you may not:

  • systematically scrape, crawl, or bulk-download pages, annotations, or search results from this website using automated tools;
  • republish or redistribute our pitch accent annotations, editorial notes, or rendered library pages, in whole or in substantial part, on another website or service;
  • incorporate our annotation output into a commercial product, dataset, or training corpus;
  • represent our work as your own, or remove or obscure attribution to akusento;
  • use the Service to build a directly competing product based substantially on scraped output rather than independent work; or
  • interfere with, overload, or attempt to circumvent technical or access limitations on the Service.

If you are interested in licensing our data or annotations for a use not covered above, please contact us — see Section 12.

6. Data files and structured output

Structured data files available on this website — including chapter annotation data and other JSON output generated by the akusento parser — are protected under Section 3 to the extent they reflect original analysis, rule application, or editorial content. They are provided for viewing and personal use within the Service only.

We do not claim ownership over standard Japanese pitch accent data as such, because this data represents linguistic facts of the language rather than original creative expression. Bulk scraping or systematic downloading of the dictionary search database is nonetheless not permitted, in order to maintain the reliability and intended use of the Service.

7. Third-party and source material

Literary works presented in the akusento library originate from 青空文庫 (Aozora Bunko) and are in the public domain. We make no ownership claim over the underlying source text itself. Our pitch accent annotations, furigana rendering choices, editorial notes, and structured data layered on top of that text are our own original work and are covered by Section 3.

Example sentences used in the training tool include material from Tatoeba. Tatoeba text sentences are generally made available under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 France license (CC BY 2.0 FR), unless another license is indicated. Attribution is provided on the relevant pages.

Pitch accent and morphological analysis is powered by UniDic (unidic-3.1.0+2021-08-31) and MeCab, used under their BSD license terms.

8. No warranty

akusento is a research preview and is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. Pitch accent analysis, including accent patterns, rule explanations, and furigana readings, may contain errors and should not be relied upon as an authoritative or professional linguistic reference. We make no guarantee of accuracy, completeness, or fitness for any particular purpose, and accuracy figures published on this website reflect specific, disclosed benchmarks rather than a general guarantee.

9. Limitation of liability

The Service is provided free of charge as a research preview. To the extent permitted by applicable law, the operator of akusento is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, the Service.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for intent, gross negligence, injury to life, body, or health, or any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.

10. Changes to the service and these terms

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue any part of the Service at any time. We may also update these Terms of Service from time to time; the current version will always be available at this URL. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

11. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, to the extent permitted by applicable consumer protection law in your jurisdiction.
